Where Has The Year Gone?

I can’t believe this is the last newsletter for 2011. I keep saying this year has just flown by and my kids tell me that this just proves how old I’m getting. You can always count on your children for a dose of blatant honesty. Our youngest child Grant works in K Mart and he reckons he knows why they call it the silly season with customers getting rather heated and stressed in the relentless pursuit of a bargain. Last week a lady started abusing the person in front because she was talking to Grant and taking too long. Before long, a heated and abusive argument started with security having to remove the two from the store. A few days later, another lady yelled at Grant for asking to check her bag. It sort of makes you laugh, but I just wonder what message this sends to our children. My advise is if you feel like going into “Christmas Overload”, take a few breaths, count to 10 and go have a coffee. You’ll feel much better. Talking of the years flying by, Simply Print turns 10 years old on 7th December. Things have certainly changed in 10 years with technology moving at an incredible pace. We’ve certainly achieved a lot and made some great friends along the way. This is an important milestone and we couldn’t make it without our loyal clients so a big thank you.

Christmas Cards.

We are still busy taking lots of Charity Christmas Card orders and it’s encouraging to see people are ready to support a charity at this time of year. A few of the designs have sold out but it’s not too late to order your cards. Our Christmas Hibernation.

Not unlike most business people, the only break we get all year is at Christmas time. We call it our “Christmas Hibernation”, where Brad, myself and the family veg out for a week or three doing very little so we can re-charge our batteries for the new year. Our last business day for 2011 will be Tuesday 20th December returning on Monday 9th January. The deadline for printing required before Christmas is Tuesday 13th January, so avoid disappointment, check your stocks and don’t leave it too late to order. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our clients and friends a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you all in 2012.

Charity Christmas Cards Now Available.

I can’t believe that Christmas is just around the corner again. Where has 2011 gone? The year has just flown by and I hope it’s been good for you.

We’ve just received the 2011 Charity Christmas Card catalogue and there are some great new designs available this year, which you can view by clicking the Xmas Cards link. Each year we like to support Charity Christmas Cards because not only do you get a professionally printed product, but 10% of the card cost is donated to various charities. This year the beneficiaries are the Heart Foundation, Children’s Cancer Institute and the National Breast Cancer Foundation. If you have a charity close to your heart, you simply choose a card which supports that particular charity. Stocks always run out really quick due to their popularity, so don’t leave it too late to order. Each year around November, I receive an email from the manufacturer almost every day, advising that another card design had sold out. By December there are usually only about three or four styles left in stock.

Dealing With The Lowest Bidder.

In the past I’ve often talked about the dangers of dealing with the lowest bidder, which is something I never do. The problem in business is it’s impossible to pay a little and get a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, you have to allow more money for the risk you take, and if you do that you might as well pay for something better. This rule applies to online printers who are offering business cards for as low as $20. We recently had 500 business cards printed by Vista Print. I was told that it would be printed on 300 gsm card, but the card I got was lucky to be 150 gsm. It’s smaller than standard size, and by the details on the card, no human ever saw it until it was dispatched. Call in if you’d like to see what we received. It was worth $20 just for the giggle.

What Global Financial Crisis?

There’s no doubt that the world is still in a global financial crisis, even though politicians say we aren’t. Apart from the carbon tax (or is it carbon price now), the media fire it down our faces constantly. I think that the media are over-reporting it. How much doom and gloom can we stand? This negativity can really bring you down so my family has a special way to deal with it. We just turn off the TV when the news comes on and put on a happy CD or listen to the radio. I sometimes put my iPod on random but my old daggy songs are like torture to anyone born past 1985.  I’ve even found myself having conversations with my teenage kids, (in person, not Facebook). The negativity itself isn’t the problem, it’s how you choose to deal with it. I make the choice to not worry about things I have no control over. You can either put your head in your hands and worry yourself sick or you can choose to enjoy life. I’m choosing the second option.

I can’t believe how fast the year has gone. It seemed like I was pulling down the Christmas lights, blinked, and it’s now September. Just to rub it in how fast the year has gone, we received our Charity Christmas Cards catalogue this week. It seems rather early, but you have to allow extra time if you’re posting to family overseas. The good thing about Charity Christmas Cards is that 10% of the card cost is donated to worthy Australian charities such as the Breast Cancer Foundation and the Heart Foundation. Cartridge Recycling.

Simply Print is an authorised Planet Ark collection centre. Used printer cartridges account for a large part of our landfill, and making the effort to recycle them makes a huge difference to our environment. Planet Ark and their recycling partner Close The Loop have just recycled their 15 millionth cartridge since operation.

So what happens to printer cartridges when recycled? Once collected, they are taken to a processing plant and sorted by brand and type. Many of the laser cartridges are sent back to the manufacturers for re-use or re-manufacturing using their components. Any that can’t be re-used are put through a process to remove all iron and aluminium based metals. The end result is the recovery of raw materials which are further filtered, upgraded and then used instead of virgin materials in the normal manufacture of new products. These new products can include new cartridges, but can also include products such as furniture, electronic equipment and even as a base for new roads.

So why recycle your cartridges? Each year over 350 million cartridges are thrown out to landfill and each cartridge can take over 1,000 years to decompose. Over this 1,000 year period, the highly toxic particles do irrepairable damage to our soil. Green house gas emitted from the manufacture of one single mono toner cartridge has been calculated at 4.8 kg. This is only for the cartridge itself and not the toner inside. If all of these cartridges could be recycled, think of the greener world we’d have. So please don’t throw a cartridge in your bin, throw it in ours.

Letterbox Marketing Success.

Have you ever taken the time to listen to ads from Joyce Mayne, Harvey Norman or Wow Sight and Sound fired info into our faces at a hundred miles an hour. It’s all designed to create a feeling of urgency, and it works.

The same principle goes for your leaflet. You have about two seconds to get someone’s attention before your leaflet ends up in the bin. I can say from personal experience that with letterbox drops, if you get 4% response, you’re doing really well. Realistically, it’s about 2%. So how do you increase the strike rate? A good thing to remember is to keep it short and sweet. “Catchy and bold” is much better than “your life story in fine print”. Consider incorporating a “call to action” like a cometition or discount voucher to increase the strike rate.
